Holding Station!
A Lesson in Adaptation and the Universe.
July 13th, 2022
There are many explanations for the forces that run the universe-
physics instructs us of equal and opposite reactions,
Eastern tradition accepts the Yin and the Yang,
and in modern society weʻre all trying to pick sides in the battle between good and evil.
But for the Marine Debris Technician behind the wheel of a Zodiac, the worldʻs objective truth is “holding station”- keeping the boat in one place by perfectly balancing helm and throttle against natureʻs relentless winds, waves, and currents.
Itʻs among the most important skills for the boat operator to master, allowing Divers and Spotters to safely accomplish their missions.
A half spin of helm to get the bow to the wind here...
a little kick from the port motor there...
itʻs a game of adjustments, a balancing act, a mechanical expression of finesse that is poetry in motion.
When done right itʻs as though time stands still and a harmonious universe revolves around the boat.
The gentle breeze breathes life into the seaʻs surface,
beams of sunshine dance on the ripples,
and a single manta fin flaps a leisurely hello wave as it commutes an azure lagoon.
Then, “Ready the tow rope!” is shouted from the divers, and the Marine Debris Techʻs moment of Zen is whirled away in a gyre of action.
